Submission and Rejection (Rinse and Repeat)

“You have to relish rejection. Rejection is the evidence of your hustle. Rejection is the sign that you are throwing yourself against the door.”

These words of wisdom for writers come from the new pamphlet-sized book(let) by Stephen Marche called On Writing and Failure. No one enjoys failure, but for writers and other artist types, it’s sort of the substrate of our lives. I recommend Marche’s little book, even though its opening pages are a bit stiff. It picks up nicely and is a good reminder of why we’re doing what we do and how not to get discouraged.

It reminds me of Stephen King and his “bigger nail” theory of rejection. When he was starting out and submitting his stories far and wide, he kept all his rejections on a nail by his desk. When the nail became overloaded with rejections and fell out of the wall, he simply got a bigger nail.

“Persistence is the siege you lay on fortune.” That’s another great quote from this book.

  1. I forget who started this, but several successful writers have wallpapered their bathrooms with rejection letters. I don’t think I’d like to be reminded of my “failures” every day, several times a day, so might prefer a big bonfire upon acceptance. Be persistent!
